Celebrating Christ at Work: Jobs in Christian Ministry

Even those with jobs in Christian workplaces struggle with getting up and going to work every day. With so many obstacles facing Christianity and the economy today, stresses and frustrations may take their toll on a person’s attitude. This article is designed to help encourage you in certain aspects of your jobs in Christian environments and to help you to triumph over any feelings, tasks, or persons that you feel may be limiting your potential to shine your light for Jesus.

Often times, Christians feel that God knows their hearts already, so there is no need to speak with Him about their issues and concerns. However, this is not the case. The Bible says, in I Thessalonians 5:17 to “Pray without ceasing.” By bringing your concerns to God about your jobs in Christian service, people you come in contact with, outside personal stresses, or everyday discouragements, you will have opened the door for Him to bless your life and make the most out every circumstance. Be intentional everyday about "ASKing for God’s blessings. Open your heart and your mouth always and let God help you deal with your day.  Just the act of telling it to God will often calm your nerves and bring peace that that passes all understanding.

After you have given your cares over to the Lord, then it's time to leave them there.  Let God handle that situation.  Let Him work it out for your good.  I remember a time when I worked at an office.  The supervisor was overbearing and verbally harsh.  He got on my last nerve.  But, rather than get upset and push back, I decided to pray and ask God to help me deal with it.

God is so faithful!  Instead of helping me to deal with it, He worked on the supervisor's heart and the next day I got an apology and assurances that things would be different.  And they were.  All glory and honor goes to God!  Even though we have higher expectations for those who work in jobs in Christian ministry, I'm constantly astonished and amazed by the results when I simply become a doer of the Word and not a hearer only.

Following basic Christian principles, you will troubleshoot negativity and find the right attitude to be an example for others, encourage others, and share the love of Christ!  According to Romans 8:37 “…in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”  Jobs in Christian ministry are by nature more satisfying and gratifying than any other type of job, including non-profit work, because we know that God adds His power to all that we do.

Seasons of Change: The Purpose of Jobs Ministry

By networking, encouraging other believers, and sharing and supporting each other, Christians can begin to rebuild their lives after jobs, ministry opportunities, or volunteer work have been lost.  Most believers know that God has a place and purpose for everyone’s life, even though it may not always feel that way. Those who have worked in full or part time Christian ministry know what a blessing it is to be of service to others, while serving together amongst other believers.  Sadly for many, layoffs, lack of financial support, and tough economic times can quickly take a toll on Christian jobs.

Keep in mind that ministry opportunities and volunteer work abounds.  For a person who is currently between jobs, using your time in service to the Lord is a great way to network.  Day in and day out, you will be in the company of people who will be looking out for your best interest.  When a position becomes available, it's possible that you would be one of the first people to hear about it.  Ecclesiastes 3:1 states, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven…”

Christians who see the need to support those who are struggling, step up to the plate and provide resources for the Christian community. Working side by side other believers, those who share the moral standards and ethics of Christ, make a working environment much more pleasant. What better way to learn and grown than to work day after day, encouraging and helping each other in the love of Christ?

Christians who have previously worked in such environments often prefer working in a Christian environment over a secular one. But, remember, it is important to shine your light in a dark place.  Wherever a person finds employment, they can find unsaved individuals who need encouragement, those who would be led to Christ, and other Christians who may need support.

Christian Employment Life Changing Work

Christian company where you are generously compensated and celebrated. Leave your mean boss and experience life changing work where you can truly make a genuine impact upon people. Live your dreams while working for a Christian employer who values you more than your work.

Working overseas for a Christian organization was the best thing I ever did. The work ethic and values I saw embodied deeply effected my life. An obvious managerial philosophy and style of approach was evident from the time I began work.

My initial experience so deeply impacted me that I began worldwide work for many Christian organizations throughout the globe, until eventually launching my own nonprofit >tax exempt Christian organization to help empower people to live their dreams.

Sadly corporate America rarely takes an interest in its employees, as most companies are all about profits and minimizes expenditures. This certainly doesn't make for a pleasant work environment. Conversely, Christian organizations operate from a different business model. They exist to serve humanity and enhance human life.

The use and abuse philosophy of management which permeates throughout every level of corporate America is outdated and perishing. People are catching on and awaking to the reality that they must guide their own destinies professionally, lest they be taken advantage of endlessly and not be compensated adequately.

When I made the shift and gave myself fully to do my labor of love, life truly began. Of course initially there were transitional struggles, primarily financially, but when I learned how to earn a living overseas while working abroad it all began to beautifully come together.

My big breakthrough came when I started teaching English in Asia. The Orient offers a harmonious working environment in which the concept of community is daily practiced and meaningful relationships are continually nurtured. The business model of companies in Asia are such that they have a 100 year plan. This long term approach leads to mutual respect within the corporation and organizations.

A New American Standard

The mention of job loss often makes most people anxious. Surveys show that just over 9.5% of previously employed people will be out of a job at some time during this recession. Employment rates have not actually dipped this low since "the Great Depression." Yet, there is a reason to have hope. But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth... ~Deuteronomy 8:18.

Job growth during the next ten years is expected in health care, construction, green energy, education, and transportation. This news was reported based on an analysis of labor-market data by President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. The job of an economic advisor is to gather and research economic data, then analyze it and offer alternative or comprehensive strategies. The report labeled, “Preparing the Workers of Today for the Jobs of Tomorrow,” predicted that there would be “tremendous growth” in new environment-related occupations. These new jobs were never even listed in comparable data before the year 2000.

The Great Depression ended with the New Deal. In Roosevelt's plan, Americans returned to long standing values of hard work and saving. Families "dialed-back" their standard of living, set-up and stuck to realistic household budgets, and did not spend more than they made. They saved for their children's educations, repaired automobiles and appliances instead of replacing them, and refused to purchase items that were of poor quality or that needed to be replaced frequently. We can create "The New American Standard."

Some people who are reading this article may think that because we are more advanced and have come "so far," that it would be a negative thing to return to former values. I would venture to say that a return to "tried and true" values is a good thing. Even in the area of employment we have gone far off the beaten path. Instead of people staying with a company out of loyalty and dedication, employees are quick to follow after "mo' money." It's a fallacy for people to think that our economy could withstand such enormous employment flux over a long period of time. Companies need dedicated workers. Families need parents who can stay home long enough to participate in the family unit. If everyone is just chasing the dollar, the society will suffer.

Millions of us had forgotten that the American dream is home ownership. Instead of moving toward ownership, people have been convinced that having a home mortgage is the way to go. Nothing can be further from the truth.  When you own your property, no one can foreclose or kick out off the property.   Ownership is the real reward.  When a person owns both the real estate and the house that sits on it, there is a certain freedom.  Sure you are still required to pay property taxes, but these are miniscule in comparison to a monthly mortgage note.

America is a land of prosperity.  Somehow the concept of prosperity has been interpret, by many, to be about amassing the biggest, the best, the fastest, or the most luxurious of houses and gadgets.  That concept of prosperity is very narrow and shallow.  Prosperity and success go deeper than that.  They have the qualitative component of being able to live on less than our earnings; while saving and investing, for their family.

As the saying goes, "desperate times call for desperate measures." So many of us have become accustomed to this borrowed lifestyle; we have actually tricked our minds into thinking that this is what prosperity and success are all about. We are borrowing against the future of our children -- our grandchildren. Is that really what we want -- ultimately? Do we want to live "the good life" on the backs of future generations. America never used to be like that. It's time for us to step up to the plate. Get a good job. Stay with that employer and be a loyal worker. Plan for retirement and be able to enjoy our grandchildren while they can still enjoy us. Let this be our New American Standard.
